An 84-year-old woman became one of the first persons to request for a nomination form at an Election Commission office in Eastern Malaysia today for the coming ninth general elections expected this month.

Maimun Yusuf or Tok Mun, as she is fondly known, made news in the 2008 general election when she contested as an independent candidate from Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat.

This time, she intends to contest from the same seat despite being able to bag only 685 votes during the last election and losing her life savings.

"I am doing this for people. I am afraid that if I do not try to help my people, I will have to face the consequences in my afterlife," said the affable grandmother of 19 after obtaining her nomination form.

Political parties and candidates began preparation for the elections after Prime Minister Najib Razak dissolved the Parliament yesterday.
