894 prohibited articles recovered in Tihar jail

Tihar jail officials recovered a total of 894 prohibited articles and action has been initiated against dozen warders for being involved in bringing banned items inside the high security prison complex till December 14 this year, Rajya Sabha was informed today by Home Ministry.

Prohibited items like jeans, sports shoes, leather belt, SIM card, ear-phones, hand made heaters, wooden sticks, improvised knife, rope, currency note, tobacco, Pan Masala, intoxicants, surgical blades and mobile phones were recovered from the jail, Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said in reply to questions by two MPs.

In his written reply, the minister informed that 13 warders faced action for bringing in banned materials in the jail and action was initiated against them.
 

Charge-sheets were issued in case of 11 accused. Action was kept in abeyance in one case while another matter was under examination by Vigilance branch.

In 2014, a total of 929 instances of recovery of prohibited items were reported from the jails of Tihar, the Minister added.
