91 juveniles flee from observation home in Meerut

As many as 91 juveniles today fled from the Surajkund observation home in Nauchandi area here, following which two constables were suspended for dereliction of duty, police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours today and 40 of the juveniles have been nabbed by different police teams, Superintendent of Police (City) Om Prakash said.

The juveniles escaped by crossing the boundary wall of the home, using ropes made of blankets and bedsheets, he said.

However, till now 40 juveniles have been held by police and a search for others is on, the SP said.

District Collector Pankaj Yadav has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and said that a city magistrate will submit a report regarding it within a week.
 

The number of juveniles in the Surajkund home exceeds its capacity, Yadav said.

Yesterday, 43 juveniles from here were shifted to an observation home in Bulandshahr, after which the number of juveniles in the home stands at 143.

Two constables deployed at the observation home have been suspended following the incident, SP Prakash said.
