A 96-year-old freedom fighter today led a protest march in Khateek para area here demanding total prohibition of liquor in the Taj city.

The march, led by Chimman Lal Jain, freedom fighter and a Gandhian, and was attended by over five hundred people. including women and children.

Jain said he was opposed to the growing addiction of liquor among people which, he said, was having a negative impact on families besides burning holes in their pockets.

For several weeks, the nonagenarian has been spearheading the agitations against use of liquor in various settlements in the city.

"There used to be just a dozen half a century ago, but today there are more than a thousand liquor outlets in the city", Jain told PTI.

This growing trend is a matter of worry and social workers should focus attention on how to curb this menace, he said.

A recorded talk by him on this issue will be broadcast by Agra Akashvani Kendra this evening, making him the oldest broadcaster in the country, Jain claimed.

Saying if the government fails to come up with measures to prohibit liquor, Jain threatened to jump into Yamuna river on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti).
