Asserting that it is mandatory on part of the state to ensure a child's right to live, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today called for combined efforts to bring down country's infant mortality rate.

Speaking at a conference on child health here, the Chief Minister stressed on creating awareness among masses over the issue and batted for roping in students for the purpose.

Akhilesh sought an improvement in health infrastructure, particularly in the villages, and underlined the need for adequate availability of medical staff in villages.

Listing out the steps taken by his government, he said apart from providing land free of cost to set up an AIIMS-like institute in Rae Bareli, a campaign has been launched to educate women about health issues related to their children.

On a question regarding inclusion of health and nutrition as a separate subject in state's school curriculum, he said it is a positive proposal and the government will consider the same.
