A lower court has sentenced six persons to life imprisonment for murdering a man, who had married a woman despite opposition from her family.

The convicts include the mother-in-law of the deceased, R Krishna Kumar, who had fallen in love and married Indhira of his village in Pudukottai district in 2004, despite her family objecting to the marriage.

According to the police, Kumar was hacked to death by his wife's relatives, including her brother, in 2007.

Her brother and two others were arrested later.

Following the high court's intervention, the case was transferred to the Crime Branch-CID in 2008.

Subsequently, Indhira's mother Sellammal, her (Sellammal's) sister and two relatives were arrested and the chargesheet was filed in the case.

District Additional Sessions Court judge M Sumathi Saipriya sentenced the six convicts to life yesterday.

Sellammal's sister, who was also named as an accused in the case, died during the trial.
