In a people-friendly initiative, Jamia Nagar police station is also acting as a coaching centre where students from all over the capital, especially girls, come to study.
The cops have joined hands with Shikhar, an NGO, to establish the coaching centre for students from economically weaker sections.
The first batch of 40 students will be appearing for this Sunday's entrance examination for BEd course in Jamia Millia University.
The police station consists of a library centre, which is used by the aspirants to prepare for the upcoming entrance exam. It has been operational since February 22.
It was the brain child of Additional Commissioner of Police (South-East) Ajay Chaudhary to encourage young minds and advocate female education in the society.
"Even after 60 years of independence, we think girls are only suitable for particular kind of jobs. That is our mindset. You should be determined enough to follow your dreams. Do not allow anyone to discourage you.
"Initially, people doubted our intentions. They thought that we have vested interest and we are preparing informers in the name of educating children," said Chaudhary at a ceremony to mark the conclusion of the first programme.
Nadeem, a student, said, "After graduation, I wanted to study more, but did not have enough financial resources to fund my education. However, after getting coaching from here, I feel confident for my entrance exam on May 27."
Initially, the programme was planned for 30 students but later 40 students were admitted.
"I am surprised and delighted that a number of girls have shown interest to study here as most of them have never entered a police station before. Of course, there were hurdles as some people did not show enough confidence in us and doubted the initiative," said Nadeem Akhtar, secretary of Shikhar.
