A medium stretch of a road in the heart of the city caved in this afternoon during rush hour, throwing traffic movement out of gear.
A crater of 1.5ft by 2ft appeared in the middle of the Darga Road in the Park Circus area as motorists in their hurry to drive away from the stretch resulted in a traffic jam in the area.
Mayor-elect Sovan Deb Chatterjee along with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) senior engineers rushed to the area said that it could be because of the collapse of pipeline of the age-old drainage network laid during the British-era.

"Our engineers have already started working on this and I am expecting that once the actual cause is found out we will work the whole night and repair the portion of the road," he said.
