A S Bopanna sworn in as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna was sworn in as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on Monday at Raj Bhawan here.

Prior to his new appointment, Bopanna, 59, was a permanent judge of Karnataka High Court.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi administered him the oath of office at a function in the presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the Darbar Hall of the Governor House.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, judges of Gauhati High Court, members from the legal fraternity, Assam Chief Secretary Alok Kumar, Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia and other senior officials of the state government.

 

Born on May 20, 1959, Justice Bopanna enrolled as an advocate in 1984 and practised in civil, constitutional, company, service matters in the Karnataka High Court as well as other civil and labour courts, according to his profile on the high court website.

He was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in January 2006 and a permanent judge in March, 2007.
