The state-owned Airports Authority of India (AAI) has secured the mandate for the operations, development and maintenance of the Diu airport.
As part of this mandate, the AAI will provide necessary infrastructure and passenger facilities at the airport, which is under the Daman and Diu administration.
To execute the project, the authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Union Territory Administration of Daman on March 20, a release said.

At present, national carrier Air India operates four flights a week on Mumbai-Diu-Mumbai sector on viability gap funding, which is provided by the Diu administration, the release added.
Viability gap funding refers to grants by the government to support projects that are economically justified but not financially viable.
