Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has rallied behind residents of Aarey Colony in suburban Mumbai who are opposed to tree-felling for the Metro 3 project, according to an official party statement issued here today.

An AAP statement said that the proposed felling of 2,298 trees in Aarey Colony, which is the only green cover left in Mumbai, is not in the city's interest since it harms the environment.

"The party feels that the balance between development and environment must be maintained," the statement said.

Experts and social activists have demanded that the Metro 3 project depot which is set to come up in the area ought to be shifted elsewhere, it said.

"The government is not giving a thought to alternative suggestions, though the Metro 3 project is also essential for Mumbai's infrastructure," the statement said, adding that the environmental feasibility report by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation was incorrect and the government should take action against the guilty.

AAP will support local residents in their agitation, it said.
