Aam Aadmi Party members today staged a silent protest at Marina beach here, condemning reports that senior police officials have been assigned to monitor crime reporters.

More than 30 members of AAP-Tamil Nadu unit staged a protest with their mouths tied near the shores of Marina, a party statement said.

A section of media had reported that city police had assigned senior police officials to journalists covering crime news in leading English and vernacular dailies to keep them in 'good humour' to avoid any negative publicity for the Chennai cops.

A local journalist body, Chennai Union of Journalists, had also complained to the Press Council of India on this issue.

City police had rubbished the reports terming them as "factually incorrect" and said there were no instructions or internal circular issued to any other effect, as reported in certain sections of media.
