An alert has been sounded in the border district after an abandoned car was found at Farfal village near here, with the occupants escaping after being chased by villagers, police said today.

The car with a Jammu and Kashmir registration number was noticed by villagers last night following which they gave it a chase.

The occupants of the car then locked the vehicle and ran away, Senior Superintendent of Police Pathankot Rakesh Kaushal said.

Police have launched a hunt for the occupants.

"Once the car is unlocked, we will be able to find details about its occupants," he said.

Heavily armed terrorists had sneaked into Pathankot in January this year to attack the IAF base.
