"The NHRC has issued a notice to Haryana Chief Secretary asking him to submit a report on the incidents of abandoning of girl children which has recently shot up in the state," a statement from the rights body said.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the incidents, the Commission said, "In a span of 10 days in April and May, four abandoned baby girls were admitted to Post Graduate Institution of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, in a critical condition."

The NHRC directed the Haryana Chief Secretary to give details on whether any step has been taken by the state government in the past for sensitising the people of Haryana of the consequences of low sex ratio.

It has also sought details about what remedial measures, like setting up of cradles outside the destitute woman homes or nursing homes or hospitals, were being taken to prevent abandoning of the new born.

The Commission has given four weeks time to the state to file its response.
