A Block Development Officer who was allegedly abducted by militant group GNLA from a remote village in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district was released unharmed after spending a week in captivity.

Jude Rangku T Sangma, who was abducted by Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on October 27 last, was released near Allagre and reached home today.

"Mr Sangma has reached his home in Tura safely today at around 5 AM," Superintendent of Police Lakador Syiem told PTI.

He said the abductors released him last night and after a long trek, he reached home safe and sound.

While police are yet to investigate into the abduction of the BDO, Syiem said he will be formally quizzed by police in a day or two.

The GNLA which owned up the abduction also announced on its Facebook page last night that the group released him since his "custody" was no longer required.

A senior home department official, however, said the release came after the High Court has asked the Centre to consider imposing AFSPA in the Garo Hills region to help the administration bring in a rule of law.

Sangma is the brother-in-law of an SP in-charge High Court security, Bobby Momin.
