A seven-year-old girl, abducted from a place near Harinagar village in neighboring Assam, was rescued and a 53-year old non-tribal arrested for allegedly abducting the child.

A joint operation by the officials of the Joypur Police Station in Assam and the Mizoram Police, with the help of the Harinagar villagers, led to the arrest of Santosh Kumar Rai and securing the release of the little girl yesterday, a Mizoram police spokesman said today.

Both the accused and the abducted girl were brought to Aizawl today.

Police described Rai as the friend of the abducted girl's mother who belonged to Lengte hamlet, about 40 km west of Aizawl.

The mother had fallen sick and was admitted to the Aizawl Civil Hospital from where Rai, on the pretext of taking the girl to purchase medicine, abducted her on October 3 while the FIR was filed in the Aizawl Police Station by the mother only on October 6.

The Police team combed the Lengte hamlet, nearby jungle and jhum (shifting cultivation) areas for days after which they received information that the abductor left Mizoram and had entered Assam.
