A Congress delegation today met the family members of Bhim Sain and Gurjant Singh Janta who were attacked allegedly by henchmen of liquor baron and Akali leader Shiv Lal Doda in Abohar, leading to the former's death.

The delegation, which was sent by Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh, comprised MLAs Ajaib Singh Bhatti, Sunil Jakhar, Harchand Kaur, Karan Brar and Mohammad Sadiq.

"We went to Abohar today and met the families of victims... During the meeting, we assured all possible help to the victims' families," Congress MLA Bhatti said.

"The families have been living under constant fear and they should be given police protection... We want the state government to nab all the accused involved in the gruesome murder of a Dalit man," said Bhatti.

The delegation also met representatives of 'Bhim Tank Katal Kand Sangharsh' Committee and assured them of support.

"We met the representatives of Sangharsh Committee and assured them all sorts of help they require to get justice in this case," said Jakhar, MLA from Abohar.

Questioning the police investigation into the case, Jakhar said the police had not even bothered to record statements of family of Bhim Sain who was murdered. "The investigation by the police is an eyewash to save the main accused Shiv Lal Doda," said Jakhar.

The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Abohar superintendent of police in this regard.

Yesterday, Jakhar had sought a CBI inquiry, monitored by a Punjab and High Court judge, into the murder of the 27-year old Dalit man whose limbs were chopped off on December 11.

Meanwhile, the convener of Bhim Tank Katal Kand Sangharsh Committee, Gopichand, announced that a Punjab Bandh will be observed tomorrow in protest against the "shoddy" police investigation into the case.

"We will be observing Punjab Bandh tomorrow as police have failed to arrest main accused in this case and we have no faith in their inquiry. We want CBI inquiry in this matter," said Gopichand.

He further said SSP Fazilka should also be suspended for "poor" investigation.

He said that government job and Rs 1 crore compensation each to the family members of the victims should be given.
