About Rs 100 crore loss to railways due to floods

Southern Railway has incurred a loss of about Rs 100 crore due to the torrential rains and resultant floods in different areas in Tamil Nadu, a top railway official said today.

Preliminary estimates suggested a loss of Rs 100 crore, Southern Railway General Manager Vashishta Johri said here.

Besides, Railways had refunded Rs 30 crore to those who have reserved tickets, due to cancellation of trains in the flood affected areas, Johri said.

About 40 compartments and eight engines were damaged due to water logging and a few kilo metres of track also damaged near Chennai.

For the development of passenger facilities and basic amenities, Railways had spent Rs 67 crore last year and it would be around Rs 165 crore this year for renovating the pathway in railway stations, escalators for the benefit of old persons and also physically challenged, he said.
