An absconding dacoit Sunil Tomar, who was set to be elected unopposed as Sarpanch of Aisah village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested by the police today.

Tomar is accused in a number of cases related to loot, attempt to murder, suicide and keeping illegal arms.

"Tomar, against whom the Inspector General (IG) Chambal Range had announced a reward of Rs 15,000, was arrested from his ancestral village of Aisah," Ambah town's Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Kishore Singh Bhadoria said.

Tomar was set to get elected unopposed after the sarpanch of Aisah village as well as other aspirants withdrew from the fray after they heard that Tomar had also filed his nomination papers for the ongoing local body polls.

It is not clear how Tomar filed his nomination papers for the elections.

However, the SDOP said that the police is verifying whether Tomar had personally appeared to file his nomination papers or if it was done by a proposer who was seconded by his supporter.

In panchayat elections, it is not necessary for the candidate to personally appear before the returning officer to file his or her nomination papers, Bhadoria said.

"May be it was filed by Tomar's proposer and seconded by his supporter," the SDOP said.
