An absconding accused in the murder of an 80-year-old woman two years ago in Malappuram district was today arrested at Erode in Tamil Nadu, Crime Branch-CID today said.

Abdul Salam (33) had entered her house at Kottakal on the night of October 14, 2013 when she was sleeping. After strangling her with his dhoti, he decamped with some ornaments found on the body, CB-CID police here said.

As there had been no progress even after eight months of investigation by Kottakal police, the job was entrusted to the Kozhikode CB-CID police who identified the culprit but he could not be traced.

A special team under CB-CID Superintendent, K B Venugopal made inquiries at several places in Kerala and also in Goa, Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Chennai and Coimbatore, they said.

Based on a tip-off that he was hiding in Erode, the team nabbed Abdul Salam at Erode railway junction and brought him to Kozhikode.

He was formally arrested today, they said.
