The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) today began a three-day demonstration, pressing for its long-standing demand of curving out a separate state comprising Bodo-inhibited areas in Assam.
On the first day of the agitation, scores of youths from Bodo community held a protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding immediate intervention of the Centre.
ABSU president Pramod Boro said the organisation has sent memorandums to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh demanding formation of a separate Bodoland state.
Alleging that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was not sympathetic to the demands of the community, Boro also accused Modi of not fulfilling his election promise of addressing problems of the Bodo community.
The ABSU president said the organisation will launch an year-long agitation in Assam starting next month if there was no response by the Centre towards the demands of the Bodo community.
"We waited for more than two years for the NDA government to at least look at the issue. But it appears the government is not at all interested. So, we do not have any option but to start the agitation again," he said.
