ACB arrests PWD engineer of Raigad district for graft

An executive engineer (Class-I officer) with the Public Works Department of the Raigad district who allegedly demanded and accepted a bribe from a contractor to clear his pending payment was arrested today by Anti-Corruption Bureau officials, ACB sources said here today.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of the ACB, Thane Range, Datta Karale said here today that engineer Budesh P Rangari (58) of the road development division had demanded Rs 73,000 from the contractor who had repaired the Government Rest house at Panvel and constructed the ladies block in the rest house.

A bill of Rs 3,77,000 was meant to be paid to him for work done out by him and to clear the payment, the engineer had made a demand of Rs 73,000.
 

The aggrieved contractor lodged a complaint with local ACB unit officials who caught the engineer accepting the money today noon at the Road Development Division office at Bhingari in New Panvel, the ACB said.

Additional Superintendent of Police ACB Thane Shrinivas Ghadge told PTI that offences under sections 7,13(1)(d) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988, have been registered with the local police station, he said.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Raigad unit of the ACB, he said.

Ghadge said that when a house search was carried out by ACB officials, cash worth Rs 1,28,65,500 was seized by officials.
