DMK today welcomed the National Commission for Backward Classes' recommendation to raise the creamy layer criterion for OBCs from existing Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.5 lakh for reservation benefits and urged the Centre to accept it.
Party chief M Karunanidhi said that DMK's 'firm stand' was that there should be no concept of 'creamy layer' at all since it had 'created divisions' among Other Backward Castes (OBCs).
"However, considering that due to the creamy layer concept the 27 per cent reservation (introduced by UPA I regime) could not be properly implemented and that the OBCs could not enjoy all the benefits offered by the government, Narendra Modi-led government should accept the recommendation and immediately issue orders," he said in a statement.

If the Centre accepted the said proposal, crores of OBCs could benefit from additional reservation in central and state government education and employment, he said.
Recalling DMK's consistent stand in support of the quota system for OBCs since the Mandal Commission days, he said reservation was key to ensuring social justice.
