Accused hits woman constable

A Salem Armed Reserved Police woman constable was allegedly beaten by an accused in a theft case for not giving her mobile phone to him, police said today.

The incident occurred when the accused, Sundaram, was being brought from the Salem central prison to Mettur Judicial Magistrate court last evening, Sub-Inspector Hariharan said.

Three police personnel including two women constables were escorting him and when he did not get the mobile phone, he allegedly hit a woman constable in the stomach and head.

He has been arrested under IPC sections including 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), police said.
