Accused tries to commit suicide in court; thwarted by public

An accused in several cases attempted to commit suicide in a court here today by snatching the rifle of a constable and shooting himself but was thwarted by members of the public, police said.

They said the 30-year-old man, an accused in many cases like kidnapping and attempt to murder, had been brought to the court here from the central prison by four armed constables in connection with a hearing in a case.

He suddenly broke the glass door of the court room, snatched a constable's rifle and tried to shoot himself but members of the public overpowered him, police said.
 

He told the judicial magistrate before whom he was produced that he tried to take the extreme step as he was being 'tortured' in jail and also not being given proper food. solitry

The magistrate later remanded him to 15 days judicial custody.
