IPS officers overstaying their central deputation will face disciplinary action, which could also be initiated against the head of Central Armed Police Forces under whom they serve, the government has warned.

In a communication to chiefs of Central Armed Police Forces like CRPF, BSF and CISF, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi has said it will be the responsibility of the head of the organisation to relieve IPS officers on completion of their tenure at the Centre.

No officer will be retained in the organisation beyond the approved tenure. Even in case where a request has been made for extension, the officer will get relieved automatically if no approval of the competent authority has been received by the stipulated date.

"Any overstay beyond the approved period of deputation without prior approval of the government of India shall lead to an adverse impact on the prospects of the officer at the time of empanelment and could also lead to disciplinary proceedings against the officer himself/ herself as well as head of the organisation," Mehrishi's letter said.

The Union Home Secretary's letter came following instances of officers not adhering to the stipulated guidelines strictly.

"There have been instances of overstay by IPS officers on central deputation. This Ministry has taken a serious view of such instances. Against this background, the heads of Central Armed Police Forces and other police organisations are advised to follow instructions/ guidelines strictly," the letter said.

The Home Secretary said deputation shall be valid only for the period for which it has been approved by the central government.

Based on the joining report, a specific order indicating the last date of deputation would also be issued by the department/ organisation.

Any extension in deputation shall neither be automatic nor should it be presumed merely on the ground that the organisation concerned or the officer or both had made a request to the central government for extension, the letter said.
