The police administration has withheld the salary of 70 station house officers (SHOs) in the district and served show cause notices to 10 Deputy Superintendents of Police for their alleged laxity in dealing with serious crimes.
DIG of Central Range, Patna, Rajesh Kumar expressed hope that this action would compel the police officials to pull up their socks.
"There have been instructions that in cases of serious crimes like murder, dacoity and loot, there should be at least one arrest per day. This is not a tall order. But the officials' performance has been woefully short of expectation," Kumar said today.

He said, "Arrests in connection with cases of less severe nature would hardly have any impact on crime control."
So, the salaries of 70 non-performing SHOs were withheld with strict instruction to improve performance, Kumar said.
"I also issued show cause notices to 10 DSPs asking them to explain why they have not been able to ensure that SHOs in their jurisdiction perform as per expectations," he said.
The Bihar Police Association, however, said withholding salaries would have an adverse effect on the affected employees' family members who are not at fault.
The decision should be withdrawn, Association's president Mrityunjay Singh said.
Opposition members had created a ruckus in the Assembly yesterday over alleged deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
