Thakur alleged that the gap in detention period mentioned in both cases shows that Singhal was detained illegally

A local activist today filed a complaint with National Human Rights Commission seeking an inquiry into alleged illegal detention of VHP leader Ashok Singhal.

In her complaint, activist Nutan Thakur said that as per news reports, Singhal was arrested by police when he landed at Amausi airport at Lucknow at 10 AM on August 25, claiming this was also confirmed by ADG (law and order) Arun Kumar.

But in a counter affidavit filed in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court by the UP government in a habeas corpus petition seeking release of the VHP leaders who were taken into custody, Singhal was arrested by Sarojini Nagar station officer while returning to Lucknow from Nawabganj (Unnao) and going to Shaheed Path at 10:30 PM, Thakur claimed.

Thakur alleged that the gap in detention period mentioned in both cases shows that Singhal was detained illegally and accused the State of filing a false affidavit in the Court.

She has also prayed for appropriate instructions to be issued to the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and DGP of all the states to immediately stop this system of illegal detention.
