A social activist in a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court has sought to restrain self-styled Godman Asaram Bapu and general public from wasting water during the forthcoming Holi festival.

The letter, written by Vishnu Gawli, has sought police to restrain Asaram from celebrating Holi and wasting tonnes of litres of water in Maharashtra, which has been hit by a severe drought.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice A V Mohta has asked Gawli to file a proper public interest litigation on the issue.

Gawli has sought criminal and preventive action against Asaram Bapu, who organised pre-Holi celebrations in Nagpur yesterday where lots of water was wasted. The self-styled Godman was also scheduled to organise pre-Holi celebrations in Navi Mumbai later today.

Gawli has also sought that Asaram should be made to supply water tankers in drought affected areas in the state.
