Hours before the four days 'night road-blockade' sponsored by the NGOs pressing for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state started today, they attempted to set ablaze a school and a bus at Mawprem and Nongmensong area here.

NGO activists have attempted to burn down a school at Mawprem, East Khasi hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) M Kharkhrang said here.

The incident took place at around 10 am when a group of activists attempted to set fire to Anath Ashram Lower Primary School, at Mawprem.

The window of the school building was partially damaged, he said, adding that the activists also attempted to set fire a mini bus at around 3.45 PM by using petrol at Nongmensong.

The driver had gone home for lunch and had parked the bus on the roadside.

"Their attempt however failed, when some people saw and put off the fire," the SP said.

Also, a driver of a vehicle was also picked up by police after he was found carrying petrol in a bottle.

The 7 PM to 5 AM statewide night road blockade will be effective till September 13, as a move to protest against the adamant attitude of the state government to implement the ILP in the state.

City roads wore a deserted look soon after the commencement of the road blockade.
