As part of tackling the growing load of work at the Jadavpur University, the West Bengal government today introduced the Jadavpur University (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in the Assembly to appoint an additional Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
"Jadavpur University has so many campuses but has only one Pro-Vice Chancellor. The state government has realised that the university requires a second Pro-Vice-Chancellor," state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said in the Assembly today.
Chatterjee said that the Jadavpur University has its main campus in Jadavpur on a 60-acre land and the Salt Lake campus on a 21-acre land besides expanding on an eight-acre land belonging to the now-closed-National Instruments.
"The establishment is expanding. There is 850 sanctioned posts for teachers, 38 for officers and 1500 non-teaching posts. And the workload is increasing without any progress," he said.
The Jadavpur University hardly had conducted any audit, the minister said adding that the state government would seek clarification in case of any financial irregularities there.
"Jadavpur University has a budget of Rs 195 crore for the 2016-17. We have felt that that the state will seek clarification on how the money was spent."
"If there are any financial irregularities, the JU board Executive Committee will look into it. Even after that if they fail to solve the matter, our representatives will look into it. In fact, audit is also not done and all these workload are getting accumulated."
Citing that the Calcutta University has two Pro Vice-Chancellors, Chatterjee said that the state was thinking on appointing a second Pro-Vice-Chancellor wherever the workload and functions were expanding.
"CU has two Pro Vice-Chancellors. We are trying to appoint a second Pro Vice-Chancellor wherever the workload and functions are expanding," Chatterjee said in the Assembly.
The Bill was passed in an empty House with the Opposition, both Congress and its ally in the state, the Left Front boycotting the ongoing session.
The Opposition staged a mock-Assembly session outside the House for an hour.
