A police officer and two security personnel accompanying him were allegedly assaulted by a group of drunken youths when the latter were asked to clear a road and reduce the volume of blaring mikes on Ausgram-Bhatkunda road in Burdwan district last night.
The incident occurred at Premgunj under Ausgram police station when Additional Superintendent of Police D Saha was returning to Burdwan from Kanksa last night after overseeing arrangements for the central force personnel who are in the state for the forthcoming Assembly elections, police said.
The youths had an altercation with the security personnel accompanying the additional SP when they were asked to clear the road on which they they were dancing to loud music as part of Kalipuja celebration in the area.
The youths started beating up the security personnel and when the officer intervened, he too was assaulted, they said.
The three police personnel were taken to a hospital in Mankad and later to a private hospital in Burdwan.
Saha and one of his security men were discharged after first-aid. The other is still admitted in the hospital.
Eight people have been detained in this connection, the police said.
