A total of 3,500 places have been identified as 'sensitive' in Tamil Nadu and adequate forces will be deployed in these areas for the May 16 Assembly elections in the state, a top police official said today.

"All necessary steps have been taken and paramilitary forces will take care of these areas" Tamil Nadu ADGP (Law and Order), C Sylendra Babu told reporters here.

"We have taken necessary security arrangements, so that the law and order situation is maintained during the elections," he said.

Babu, here to discuss and review the security arrangements for the elections with senior police officials of Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Tirupur districts, said personnel drawn from para military forces and ex-servicemen will be deployed in sensitive areas.

Taking into account the suspected Maoist movements, additional security will be provided on Inter-State border areas along Coimbatore and Nilgiris Districts, he said.

Around 8,000 persons with criminal background, offenders and ex-convicts were taken into preventive custody, he said.
