An ADG-rank police officer will monitor the progress of ongoing investigation into the cases registered against Naxal-turned-gangster Mohammed Nayeemuddin, who was killed in an encounter last month.

An eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Telangana Police was set up on August 10 to probe the killing of Nayeemuddin.

The SIT, headed by Inspector General (North Zone) Y Nagi Reddy which has now got more members, is also inquiring into various criminal activities in which the 45-year-old gangster and his associates were involved. The team has so far registered 72 cases and arrested 80 accused in the state.

The cases pertain to murder, extortion, land grabbing and human trafficking among others.

"To have a better monitoring of these cases, it is also ordered that Telangana Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anjani Kumar will monitor the progress along with Nagi Reddy so that the investigation can be completed expeditiously," a release from the DGP office said here.

As the volume of investigation has increased exponentially, the existing strength created in the SIT has also been enhanced with addition of five more police officers, it said, adding, the team has been asked to take the services of a competent legal advisor to ensure effective prosecution.

Nayeemuddin alias Nayeem, wanted in a string of criminal cases, including the murder of an IPS officer, was killed in an alleged encounter with police in Shadnagar town of Mahabubnagar district, around 90 km from here, on August 8.

According to police, Nayeemuddin, who was once a Maoist, had formed a gang and carried out extortions, kidnappings and land grabbings, among others, most of which were not reported to police due to fear of reprisal.
