ADGP (CB-CID) Karan Singha today appeared before Madras High Court bench here in connection with a case involving alleged kidnap of a woman last year.

The ADGP was earlier directed to appear in the court on September 30 as there was no progress in the investigation in the case. But, he did not turn up then and appeared today.

21-year old Vivetha's father had filed a habeas corpus petition seeking a direction to police to produce her.

When the matter came up today, the ADGP appeared before the court. Justices V Dhanabalan and M Duraiswamy gave six weeks' times to trace the girl and the alleged kidnapper, V Ashok, and posted the case for hearing after six weeks, accepting a CB-CID plea.

Meanwhile, CB-CID DSP P Malaichamy, in his status report, said Special-Sub Inspector George Raja, Head Constable Muthupandi and Woman Constable Chitra had been issued charge memo and their increments cut for being lethargic in their duty and allowing Vivetha and Ashok to escape. Besides criminal cases had been filed against them. He sought two months' time to locate the woman.

The case was transferred to the CBCID on April 19 last by the high court.

The petitioner alleged that Ashok of Pattukottai on November 25 last year kidnapped his daughter along with 110 sovereign jewels with an intention of marrying her.

The two were later traced in Udhagamandalam and local police had handed over their custody to Pattukottai police team. However, SSI Raja, who led the team, allegedly allowed them to escape.
