An advice to take her ailing neighbour to a doctor cost a woman of West Singhbhum district her life as she was branded witch and allegedly killed by locals following the neighbour's death, police said today.

The victim, identified as Basumati Gope (45), was killed last night by locals at Ghatkuri village in Gua police station.

Earlier, the victim had advised family members of her neighbour Budhram Bobonga, who was not keeping well for some days, to consult a qualified doctor to treat his disease.

However, the family members did not pay heed to her advice and Bobonga died on July 21, a day after Gope asked them to take him to a doctor, police said.

As she advised them to take Bobonga to a doctor, the neighbours, including the Bobonga family, branded her a witch and held that her black magic was responsible for Bobonga's death.

The accused barged into the house of Gope last night and killed her using bows and arrows, they said.

A named FIR has been registered against seven persons in this regard. All the accused are at large.
