Lawyers of Mathura today went on an indefinite strike against police "failure" to take action against an RLD leader who allegedly assaulted a senior advocate three days ago.

"Not only the indefinite strike started today would continue, but I and one another advocate would sit on a hunger strike in front of police office from tomorrow," Bhanu Pratap Singh, Secretary of Mathura Bar Association, said.

The protesting lawyers also took out a procession in the court campus here.

Meanwhile, the police said that they would act depending on the merit of the case.

"Both the groups (in the case) had met me earlier. Action would be taken on the basis of merit," SSP Gulab Singh said.

A delegation of advocates had met SSP Gulab Singh demanding speedy action against city chief of RLD Shyam Chaturvedi. The delegation had claimed that on the day of Diwali, Chaturvedi assaulted senior advocate Puspa Raj Singh in the Dhauli Piau area over leakage of water from an AC.

An FIR was filed by the advocate in this regard.

An NCR was also filed by Shyam Chaturvedi also.
