"Advocates are often called 'sharks'. Let us work to get rid of this tag. A lot of change in the mindset is required to alter this situation," the CJI said.

He was addressing students at the 4th convocation of the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), sharing the stage with Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Congratulating medal winners and freshers, Kabir said "When we studied law, it was not approached with the seriousness you studied. It was kind of a pastime and whatever we learnt, we learnt out of classroom".

He said a lot has changed since those times.

"The five-year integrated law courses have widened the scope of the law studies", added the CJI.

Observing that every information is available on finger tips these days, the CJI said, "Today, the signing of an agreement can be completed within 15 minutes. People can get information about law on internet. In the Supreme Court, judges have law researchers and each is as brilliant as the other".

He emphasised that commitment was of paramount importance in the legal profession.

"What is important in the legal fraternity is the amount of commitment a person has and ultimately that is what pays," the CJI told the gathering.

Referring to the analogy of Supreme Court Cases (SCC), he said aspiring lawyers should possess sincerity, compassion and commitment (SCC).

"As soon as you wear the dress, people must repose their faith in you", the CJI said.

Stating legal profession is the best profession, he said, "Through this profession, you can make or break your own self. You are answerable to your conscience". (More)
