Lamenting the death of a 28-year-old cop aspirant from Nashik in a police recruitment camp here, members in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today felt such drives should not be held in summers.
Dada Bhuse, Independent MLA from Malegaon, through a point of propriety, urged the government to provide compensation of Rs five lakh to the family of the victim, Ambadas Sonawane, who died of heat stroke while participating in a physical test.
He said Sonawane belonged to a poor family and was the sole bread-winner.
He said there were no facilities of even drinking water for the candidates who were participating in the recruitment camp held at Vikhroli here.
Sonawane collapsed due to heat wave while taking part in the 5-kilometre running activity, which was part of the recruitment process held yesterday and died subsequently.
Bhuse said there should be some regulation on how police recruitment activities should be conducted.
Bala Nandgaonkar (MNS) felt the recruitment drive should be held in October-December period rather than in summers when humidity is very high and could affect the health of candidates.
Prithviraj Sathe, NCP MLA demanded bifurcation of Beed district and creation of new district of Ambejogai.
He said the process of bifurcation of Thane district is on and even the demand for Ambejogai district should be considered.
BJP legislator Sardar Tara Singh criticised the high rate of Aarey Milk, sold at Rs 35 per litre. "Potatoes are Rs 24 per kg, onions are Rs 30 per kg and Gokul milk is Rs 40 per litre. Where are the acche din (good days)," he asked drawing laughter from the treasury benches.
He demanded that the Maharashtra government-run Aarey should reduce milk rates so that poor people are not affected.
