Goverment today said it has raised the maximum age limit for induction of state services officers into three all-India services from 54 to 56 years, even as states like Gujarat and Maharashtra expressed reservations on the proposal.

"Most of the states were in favour of increasing the age limit, barring three or four, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. Sikkim did not make any comments," Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said in Rajya Sabha.

"After having gathered this consensus, an opinion was arrived at, that there was some reasonability in this, some rationale in this and, considering that, a proposal was moved," he added.

Through a notification on March 17, the government has raised the upper age limit for induction of state services into IAS, IPS and Indian Forest Service to 56 years from 54 earlier.

Replying to a supplementary during Question Hour, he said the age limit for induction was initially fixed at 52 years. Later, it was hiked to 54 years in sync with the retirement age of 58 years.

As the retirement age for services officers was raised to 60 years following the Fifth Pay Commission Report, there was representation from some state services officers for raising the induction age limit to 56 years.
