Agitating teachers of 2,209 block grant high schools across Odisha today returned to classes after 40 days, following a discussion with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik last night.

Classes were suspended in all the block grant schools of the state since August 18 last as their teachers sat on dharna in the state capital demanding grant-in-aid mode of payment instead of salary in block grant procedure.

The teachers were also demanding equal salary as government schools.

Though the upper primary and middle English school teachers on September 24 announced suspension of their agitation and joined work, the teachers of 2,209 block grant high schools continued with their agitation.

They have finally joined classes today, school and mass education minister Debi Prasad Mishra said.

The teachers also cancelled their proposed agitation scheduled to be organised today at Hinjili, the assembly segment of the chief minister.

Mishra said he was optimistic that the teachers would undertake extra-classes and complete the syllabus as promised during their discussion with the chief minister.

"We hope the teachers will take extra classes during the Durga Puja vacation," Mishra said.
