Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the government was making all efforts to develop agriculture and allied sectors considering the state's agrarian character.
"Agro-based industries like diary, fishery, floriculture hold immense scope in the state and their development would open up avenues of employment," Gogoi said.
He was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of the College of Horticulture at Lakhopur in Nalbari district.
Farm mechanisation was given importance as it was through scientific farming that production could be increased and farmers' prosperity could be achieved, he said.
The chief minister said priority was given to develop rural roads to give easy access to the farmers to take their produce to markets, while market sheds and cold storages were built for the benefit of the farmers.
Lauding the agriculture department for all-time high production of rice, Gogoi said the government has taken up an ambitious scheme in the interim budget for the small and marginal farmers.
Exuding optimism that the launching of Mission Double Cropping scheme would lead to a green revolution in the state, he said, "the College of Horticulture is the first of its kind in the North East and would give the much needed impetus to the food processing industry as well as the floriculture sector in the state.
