Traffic Police today announced a slew of measures to streamline traffic in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir ahead of 'Darbar Move' under which the state restarts functioning from here on May 5.
"In order to decongest the city centre and to help in smooth regulation of traffic in and around the city, we have issued a traffic plan and directed for its strict implementation," announced Inspector General of Police, Traffic, J P Singh.
The civil secretariat and other offices of state government closed in the winter capital city yesterday and would now re-open Srinagar on May 5 as part of over a century old practice of 'Darbar Move'.
The IG said according to the plan, one way traffic will remain in force on Residency Road from Radio Kashmir Crossing to Amira Kadal and no vehicle will be allowed to ply in the opposite direction.
"We will not allow people to park their vehicles on the roadside and have held discussions with the concerned agencies to have minimal charges at parking places," he said.
Singh appealed to the traders around Lal Chowk to use parking spots to park their vehicles.
"The traders keep their vehicles on the roadside and then the customers also park their cars there. We will not allow that to happen now. We do not want any obstruction to the vehicular traffic," he said.
He said the department was in touch with other government agencies to clear off the encroachments on the roads which often leads to congestion.
"It is very easy to criticise the Traffic Department. But it is the responsibility of the society as well and together we can give better traffic management in the city," he said.
