Eight persons were today injured and two vehicles damaged when a clash erupted between AIADMK and BJP workers at Melatheru area in bypoll-bound Srirangam assembly constituency here, police said.

With campaigning reaching high pitch ahead of the bypoll on February 13 in various wards in the constituency, a verbal spat erupted when BJP and AIADMK men crossed each other in the area.

Later they attacked each other with stones in which three BJP office bearers and five persons belonging to AIADMK were injured. Two vehicles, including a police one, were damaged.

Both groups blocked traffic demanding action against each other following which Assistant Commissioner Kabilan persuaded them to disperse.

Meanwhile, police seized four vehicles, two each belonging to DMK and AIADMK, for campaigning with party flags tied to their vehicles.
