Coming down hard on archrival DMK, ruling AIADMK today alleged that the previous Karunanidhi regime had "splurged crores of rupees" in organising over 600 "showy" government functions to launch new schemes.

"The Karunanidhi regime splurged crores of rupees in organising showy functions for launching schemes and the expenses for such events overshot the estimated project cost," the party said in its mouthpiece Dr Namadhu MGR said.

Launching a tirade on DMK for criticising AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for inaugurating government schemes through video conferencing, the party hailed the Jaya regime as being simple.

Slamming DMK for putting up "pompous stages" for launch functions, the AIADMK said supporters of that party were made to 'sing paeans' to Karunanidhi in such events.

"Like this, over 600 government functions were held and crores of Rupees were spent extravagantly and the money went down the drain for such programmes."

The daily hailed Jayalalithaa-led government as "thrifty, which has put a full stop to wasting people's tax money (for ostentatious functions) and squandering precious time.

Even mega projects launches are now kept simple and these were launched from the State Secretariat through video-conferencing, it said.

"The AIADMK government led by Amma has put a full stop to the pomp and show of the Karunanidhi regime by launching even mega schemes in simple fashion from the Secretariat through video conferencing," it said.
