To meet the acute housing shortage of AIIMS faculty, the Institute administration has formulated a redevelopment proposal of its campus in West Ansari Nagar and Ayur Vigyan Nagar.

"The Institute has submitted its proposals to Ministry of Health with the request that Government may seek consideration of the Expenditure Finance Committee for an expenditure of Rs 4786 crore to construct 3928 residential apartments in lieu of the 1444 apartments that currently exist on campus," said Deputy Director (AIIMS administration) V Srinivas.

The redevelopment plan formulated by the National Building Construction Corporation, a Maharatna Public Sector Enterprise of Government of India, envisages that money for the construction will be raised through monetisation of 10 per cent existing campus land.

AIIMS currently has 10171 employees eligible for housing and only 2021 residential apartments. Of these, 1076 are located at the Ayur Vigyan Nagar Campus, 368 at West Ansari Nagar Campus, 448 at East Campus, 49 at Asiad Village and 80 at Masjid Moth campus.

The redevelopment scheme envisages construction of 3060 residential apartments at Ayur Vigyan Nagar campus and 868 apartments at West Ansari Nagar Campus.

"The construction would be taken up in phases. Phase I envisages construction of 90 type V and 56 type VI units at 4 acre plot plus commercial area and 550 to 600 units of Type II and III at Ayur Vigyan Nagar vacant land to facilitate relocation. The project is expected to be completed in 36 months," Srinivas said.

He said that the proposal has been approved in-principle by the Standing Finance Committee of AIIMS on October 29, 2015. But the MoU with NBCC will be signed only after the approval of competent authority which is the Union Cabinet in the present case to take the initiative forward.

The detailed proposal identifying the housing requirements was formulated by a committee headed by Dean Research Prof SK Acharya, Director AIIMS, MC Misra who also discussed the detailed proposal with all Heads of Departments, Faculty Association, the Officers Union, the Nursing Union and the Karmachari Union on January 4, 2016.

AIIMS has also requested Ministry of Urban Development for allocation of 500 residential quarters in East Kidwai Nagar GPRA.
