AIIMS row: ACC's hunger strike enters 9th day

Amid protests by political parties, the chain hunger strike of the AIIMS coordination committee (ACC) demanding setting up an of AIIMS here entered its ninth consecutive day today.

A massive protest demonstration by Congress party activists was held at Bishnah in Samba district today and effigy of Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh was burnt over the issue of denial of AIIMS and failure of government to fulfill the commitment.

The committee also took out a candle light protest march today in Jammu city in protest against the failure of the demand in which large number of people from different walks of life including civil society groups of Jammu would participated.
 

"The huger strike has entered 9th day as a fresh batch of protesters today took their turn to sit for the day-long hunger strike. The strike will continued till demand is not fulfilled", Chairman of the ACC, Abhinav Sharma said.

The ACC resumed the strike on July 21 - after calling off their first leg of strike - but not a single state government representative has so far tried to contact us, he added.

ACC, an amalgamation of over 70 organizations, is spearheading the agitation for setting up of an AIIMS in the Jammu region.

They have given a three-day complete Jammu bandh call starting from July 31. It will be the third bandh observed over the issue in Jammu since April this year.

A complete bandh was earlier observed on April 24 and May 27 after which Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh had given a written assurance that an AIIMS will be announced for Jammu by the Centre on or before July 20.
