The NDA government will try to strike a balance between labour and industry and "amendments in labour legislation will be done keeping in mind the welfare of the working class", Labour Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said today.
Tomar, who held a meeting with the representatives of Central Trade Union Organisations (CTUOs) here today, said that the government is committed to the motto of 'Shramev Jayate'.
"(The minister) talked about the responsibility of the government to strike a balance between the interests of labour and industry. He reiterated that amendments in labour laws will be done keeping in mind the welfare of the working class," according to a release here.
Describing the discussions as "positive and meaningful", he said that the issues raised by the trade unions were "serious".
Tomar urged the trade unions to strengthen their ground- level organisational structure so that they can attract the maximum number of workers to join as members.
The trade unions, meanwhile, are learnt to have told the government in a "unanimous voice" that workers' demands have to be looked into even as they said that the earlier government had failed to do so despite assurances.
The unions also stressed on the need to regularise the work of the various tripartite committees constituted in the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
"The government has been told in a unanimous voice that the demands of the workers have to be looked into, which the earlier government failed to do despite assurances given by the Prime Minister and the formation of a GoM," AK Padmanabhan, President of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), told PTI.
Besides the representatives of 12 CTUOs, the meeting was attended by Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Vishnu Dev Sai and the labour and employment secretary along with senior officials.
