Praising Suu Kyi for her struggle to bring democracy in Myanmar, AIPSO General Secretary A A Khan said Suu Kyi led the democracy uprising and formed the National League for Democracy (NLD) in 1988.
Though her party won 82 per cent seats in general elections in 1992, the ruling military junta refused to hand over power to NLD, he said.
"She had been in and out of jail and house arrest before being finally released in 2002," he said, adding that India has been supporting her father Aung San and later Suu Kyi.
Khan said AIPSO was started by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to create awareness on unity, world peace and disarmament and has worked diligently over since to achieve its goals and objectives.
