Public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) today commemorated eight decades of adoption of its name by organising a seminar.

It was on June 8, 1936 that the institution adopted the new name - All India Radio (AIR) replacing Indian State Broadcasting Service.

"On the occasion the AIR in Delhi has organised seminar titled 'This is All India Radio' while other stations are also commemorating the event in their ways," an official said.

Officials said on August 30, 1935, the then Controller of Broadcasting Lionel Fielden had taken over the organisation and in September 1935, broadcasting began in the princely state of Mysore with the name Akashvani (the voice from the sky).

On January 1, 1936, the Delhi station of the Indian State Broadcasting Service had gone on air but Fielden was keen that a new name be chosen.

On June 8, 1936, the name All India Radio (AIR) was chosen and became an integral part of our culture, officials said.
